Only in the city of Vahdat, 11 people, including 8 men and 3 women, died. The statement of the Emergency Situations Committee from August 28 states that “On August 27, 2023, heavy rains in the territory of the country caused floods, rockfalls and landslides in the cities of Dushanbe, Vahdat, Hisor, districts of Rudaki, Varzob, Devashtich, Rasht, Sangvor.” and became Tajikabad. Unfortunately, these incidents cost lives.”
In total, 13 people died, but according to reports, the number of victims may be higher, as the cleanup and elimination of the consequences of the disaster continues. According to the committee, “15 cars were stuck in the mud in Rohati community and unfortunately 2 people died.”
On the Dushanbe-Khujand road, 15 cars were buried under mud and stones due to landslides. In the city of Dushanbe, Rasht district, the flood damaged various structures, including roads and houses.
The Emergency Situations Committee says that high-ranking officials have gone to the places of the incident in the city of Vahdat and Rudaki district to familiarize themselves with the situation and have received an order from the government to “provide the necessary assistance to all the affected families.” The President of the Republic of Tajikistan expressed his condolences to the relatives of the victims.
Many regions of Tajikistan witnessed a storm and heavy rains last night. In the city of Dushanbe, following a storm and heavy rain, electricity was cut off for several hours. Many parts of the Tajik capital were deprived of drinking water last night.
The IRS company, responsible for the maintenance of the Dushanbe-Chanok highway, said that the road was seriously damaged due to floods and rockfalls. The company said the road is open and the cleanup is ongoing.
On August 27, some users sent a video from the scene of the incident on the Dushanbe-Chanok route and told Radio Ozodi that the flood has taken the road to the houses and the cultivated lands have also been flooded.
