The lemon growers of Vakhsh Valley are happy that this year not only the harvest is high, but the price of lemons has increased compared to last year, and its buyers have also increased.
Hokim Azimov, a resident of Jayhun district, has 600 lemon plants in several greenhouses. Most of this year’s harvest has been sold, and now the eyes are on the way to other buyers. This veteran lemon grower hopes to get a good income this year.
“Last year, the price of each kilogram of lemons was from 3.5 to 4 somoni. It did not exceed three and a half to four somoni. This year it was very good, the demand for it abroad is also high. It increased from 14 somoni to 15-16 somoni. left”, he added.
Lemon growers say that there was a large harvest last year, but the demand from foreign buyers was low and the supply of lemons in the domestic market was high, and its price fell, and they suffered.
The official says that lemon growers of the district have found their buyers this year and are taking lemons abroad.
According to Dilovarsho Sobirzoda, responsible for agriculture in Jayhun district, this year the lemon harvest is good and is being bought by entrepreneurs from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Currently, not all lemon growers have the opportunity to export their products directly. Businessmen buy it and send it abroad after packaging or placing it in boxes.
Hokim Azimov says that if the farmers pack the lemons themselves and prepare them according to the standards, they will get more income. “If we pack it well, it will find a buyer in the world markets. It’s the best lemon, but it doesn’t pack well.”
About 80 percent of Vahsh Valley lemons are grown on 150 hectares of land in Jayhun district. There are also many lemon growers in Vakhshu Kushanian and Abdurrahmani Jami districts.
Now entrepreneurs buy a kilogram of lemons from farmers for 15 to 17 somoni. In the markets of the region, it costs from 18 to 20 somoni. This is while last year one kilogram of lemons was sold at the price of 4 to 7 somoni.
