A regular meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is being held in the capital of Belarus. The foreign ministers adopted a statement on the situation in Afghanistan, Kazinform correspondent reports.
“Within the framework of the organization, work is underway on a targeted international program to strengthen certain sections of the Tajik-Afghan border. This work has been going on for a number of years, various positions are being coordinated. We will continue this work in the future. A working group operates within the framework of the program and it meets periodically. There will be another meeting during the year. The Tajik side asks what it needs to strengthen these sections of the border. The rest of the countries, as far as possible, discuss within their states, and then everything will be drawn up in one document, ”Marat Syzdykov, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the CSTO, explained on the sidelines.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik added that the situation in Afghanistan continues to be a serious challenge to security and stability in the CSTO area of responsibility, especially given the common border with Tajikistan. The list of these challenges is quite wide – terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime.
“In the statement, we reaffirmed our readiness to assist in the fight against outgoing threats to regional security, including in terms of maintaining peace and stability on the southern borders of the organization,” the Belarusian Foreign Minister told reporters.
Earlier it was reported that the Foreign Ministers adopted a statement on the prevention of an arms race in outer space.
