Tajikistan and Russia are considered strategic partners. Russia has placed its largest foreign military base on the territory of Tajikistan; up to one million citizens of Tajikistan go to Russia for work every year.
However, according to rights defenders, Tajik immigrants are considered to be the most vulnerable group of foreign workers in this country, who are subjected to pressure and suffering due to changes in relations between the leaders or governments of the two countries. Critics criticize Russia for its promises in the implementation of economic and industrial projects in Tajikistan.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and its coming under severe Western sanctions, the country’s negotiations with the former Soviet states increased. TASS writes with reference to the Statistical Agency of Tajikistan that trade transactions between Tajikistan and Russia from January to August 2023 amounted to more than 1.1 billion dollars, which is 3% more than in the same period last year.
