The Prosecutor General’s Office of Tajikistan announced the arrest of a 68-year-old man on suspicion of “immorality and performing sexual acts”.
According to this agency, a resident of Khujand without any medical knowledge presented himself as a “mullah and a doctor” to the people, and by offering exorcisms and “using the religious beliefs” of women, he committed shameful acts against them.
The General Prosecutor’s Office said in a report on October 28 that the suspect was arrested on October 23 in the house of a resident of Khujand. According to the prosecutor’s report, he came to the woman’s house with the promise of “prayer and exorcism” and performed “immoral acts” on her.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Sughd region opened a criminal case against this man.
The status of the arrested person and his relatives is not known, but in the past, the relatives of the people who were arrested on such charges called it baseless and slanderous.
For several years now, the Tajik authorities have been reporting on the discovery of crimes committed by the mullahs, who, according to this agency, are “lustful”. Experts call this a campaign to defame the clergy in society. Critics of the government say that such videos are used to discredit the opposition.
