The authorities of Tajikistan announced that in the first 20 days of the autumn recruitment campaign, more than 60 percent of the plan was fulfilled.
The fall call for military service of 18-27-year-olds begins on October 1 and continues until November 30.
The Ministry of Defense of Tajikistan said in a news release on October 21 that 66 percent of the recruitment plan has been implemented in the country so far. According to this agency, Badakhshan Mountainous Autonomous Region, Rasht, Sangvor, Lakhsh, Nurabadu Vakhsh and Farkhor districts have announced the full implementation of the draft plan.
The ministry said that in 20 days of military service, 71 percent of the plan was filled in Khatlon region and 65 percent in Dushanbe.
According to the officials, the campaign to invite citizens to join the armed forces in other regions “is organized and at a high level”.
While the authorities describe the increase in the number of people who want to serve in the army in recent years, there are no few complaints from the regions. As in the spring draft, in the next draft as well, some residents complain that the authorities put pressure on them to send their children of draft age to the service. In particular, some of the residents say that they cut off the electricity in a village in order not to send young people to the army.
Thus, recently, the attempt to recruit a young man in the city of Vahdat has become a big adventure and controversial on social networks. The case started when a young man published a video and criticized the authorities for the way he took his brother to the army and beat his grandmother and mother. His complaint made a lot of noise on social networks and the author of the video was arrested.
In August of this year, the Asht District Court punished a young man of draft age for refusing to serve in the army. The young man was fined fourteen thousand somoni.
Most of them cite the reason of desertion from the army in bad conditions and misogyny or hazing. In the last 6 months, the authorities announced the punishment of at least 10 veteran soldiers and officers for insulting recruits in military units.
In the spring of Imol, the Supreme Court sentenced an officer and seven ex-soldiers to 9-and-a-half to 11 years in prison for beating recruits . In September in Sughd region, a junior sergeant was sentenced to five years in prison.
