Rescuers of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Tajikistan recovered from the river in Varzob the bodies of a woman and her newborn child who died as a result of a mudflow.
Thus, the number of victims of the mudslide on August 28 reached 21 people.
On August 30, the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense announced the discovery of 4 more bodies of those killed as a result of the disaster.
“During the rescue operation and liquidation of the consequences of the natural disaster in the city of Vakhdat and the Varzob region, the bodies of four more dead were found; rescuers, in particular, removed the bodies of a woman and her baby from the river,” CoES spokeswoman Umeda Yusufi told Radio Ozodi.
Yesterday, authorities reported that mudslides in the country killed 17 people.
“The most victims were in the Vakhdat district – 17 people, four more were residents of the Rudaki and Varzob districts,” noted the official representative of the CoES.
The heavy rains that occurred on August 27 caused mudflows, rockfalls and landslides in 9 cities and regions of Tajikistan. The mudflow destroyed dozens of houses, kilometers of roads and power lines. In Dushanbe, heavy rains caused a power outage for several hours, and there was no drinking water in some areas of the city. Heavy downpours, landslides and rockfalls also damaged the road between Dushanbe and Khujand. Vehicle traffic along the highway has been restored, but work to clear the roadway continues.
Meanwhile, the media and social network users are also reporting dead and missing people. In particular, a local resident died as a result of a mudflow in the Tajikabad region. Kodirjon Mansurzoda, deputy chairman of the Tajikabad district, told Farazh that the body of 29-year-old resident of the village of Shing Bekhruz Sharifov was found two days after the disaster.
A family in the Penjikent region has been searching for their missing relatives for three days after a mudflow. Bakhovaddin Khaidarov and his son Aloviddin Khaidarov, residents of the village of Guzar in the rural jamoat of Mogiyon, went by car to Dushanbe on August 27 and went missing.
