Tajikistan’s national power company, Barqi Tojik, and Afghanistan’s Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat have signed an agreement for electricity purchase in 2025. The deal was finalized by the CEOs of both companies, Abdul Bari Omar and Mahmadumar Asozoda.
The agreement, valid from May to September, is renewed annually until 2028. It allows electricity exports to Afghanistan, provided there are no domestic market restrictions in Tajikistan.
The details of the electricity volume and cost for 2025 have not been disclosed yet. However, due to winter restrictions, electricity exports to Afghanistan have been halted to meet domestic demand.
Barqi Tojik has planned to supply around 1.9 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan in 2024, following 1.6 billion kWh exported in 2023. This ongoing cooperation supports the energy needs of both countries.
In the first nine months of this year, Tajikistan generated 17.2 billion kWh of electricity, a slight increase from 2023. Hydro power stations accounted for 95% of the total electricity production.
